 Family:  Labridae (Wrasses), subfamily: Bodianinae
 Max. size:  32 cm TL (male/unsexed)
 Environment:  reef-associated; depth range 10 - 40 m
 Distribution:  Western Indian Ocean: restricted, Mauritius, Réunion and St. Brandon's Shoals. Records outside this area may be bilunulatus, loxozonus, or perditio (M. Westneat, pers.comm.).
 Diagnosis:  Dorsal spines (total): 12-13; Dorsal soft rays (total): 9-11. Black band encircling body posteriorly oriented vertically in adults, almost as broad below lateral line as above; posterior edge of band not reaching past posterior edge of hypurals ventrally (Ref. 9823).
 Biology:  Adults inhabit exposed seaward reefs with sand patches (Ref. 9710). Oviparous, distinct pairing during breeding (Ref. 205).
