 Family:  Haemulidae (Grunts), subfamily: Haemulinae
 Max. size:  43 cm TL (male/unsexed); max.weight: 850.0 g
 Environment:  reef-associated; depth range 5 - 25 m
 Distribution:  Western Atlantic: southern Florida and the Antilles to Brazil.
 Diagnosis:  Dorsal spines (total): 12-12; Dorsal soft rays (total): 15-17; Anal spines: 3-3; Anal soft rays: 9-9. Maxilla reaching to below center of eye; soft portion of dorsal fin relatively high; silvery gray with dark stripes on upper half of body, the region between the upper most stripe and the dorsal fin yellow (Ref. 13442).
 Biology:  Inhabits clear reefs (Ref. 9710). Forms dense schools (Ref. 5217). Feeds on crustaceans and sea urchins (Ref. 3798). Marketed fresh (Ref. 3798).
