 Family:  Serranidae (Sea basses: groupers and fairy basslets), subfamily: Anthiinae
 Max. size:  42 cm TL (male/unsexed); max.weight: 680.0 g
 Environment:  demersal; depth range 23 - 306 m
 Distribution:  Eastern Pacific: Playa del Rey in southern California, USA to Peru.
 Diagnosis:  A sharp spine projecting anteriorly from ventral border of urohyal (Ref. 40817).
 Biology:  Probably forms schools and lives near the bottom in deep waters (Ref. 9342). Of some commercial importance in zones where it is abundant (Ref. 9342).
 IUCN Red List Status:   (Ref. 96402)
 Threat to humans:  harmless
