 Family:  Macrouridae (Grenadiers or rattails), subfamily: Macrourinae
 Max. size:  64 cm TL (male/unsexed)
 Environment:  bathypelagic; depth range 0 - 2500 m
 Distribution:  Atlantic, Indian and Pacific: Eastern Atlantic: Azores (Ref. 3857) and Madeira south to Cape of Good Hope, South Africa. Indo-West Pacific: Africa to South China Sea, Australia and New Zealand.
 Diagnosis:  General coloration is dark brown. Single row of teeth in the upper jaw (Ref. 37108).
 Biology:  Also mesopelagic (Ref. 3587). Remains of fish have been found in one stomach (Ref. 6187).
 IUCN Red List Status:   (Ref. 96402)
 Threat to humans:  harmless
