Dorsal spines (total): 5-7; Dorsal soft rays (total): 9-11; Anal spines: 1-1; Anal soft rays: 11-14. The distal end of upper jaw extending slightly backward beyond vertical through anterior border of orbit. The anus is 2 to 4 scales in front of the pelvic fin tips, rarely more than 3 scales (Ref. 9760).
Description: Characterized by having 17-19 predorsal scales; depth of body 4.0-5.3 in SL; large eye, 2.1-2.6 in head length; front edge of pupil not reached vertical by upper jaw; posterior end of lower jaw with tubercle; presence of teeth on vomer; teeth present or absent on palatines (Ref. 90102). |
Inhabits shallow coastal waters (Ref. 3302); broadly distributed throughout mangrove estuaries to the open coast (Ref. 93954). Occurs in schools along calm shorelines (Ref. 37816). Important as forage food species to larger commercial fish and as bait fish (Ref. 3302). |
