 Family:  Pomacentridae (Damselfishes), subfamily: Pomacentrinae
 Max. size:  17 cm TL (male/unsexed)
 Environment:  reef-associated; depth range 3 - 40 m, non-migratory
 Distribution:  Pacific Ocean: Christmas Island and offshore reefs of northwestern Australia in the eastern Indian Ocean to the islands of Oceania (excluding the Hawaiian Islands). Reported from Maldives (Ref. 5579), Japan and Taiwan (Ref. 1602 and 4868, respectively). Replaced by Chromis opercularis in western Indian Ocean (Ref. 37816).
 Diagnosis:  Dorsal spines (total): 13-13; Dorsal soft rays (total): 10-11; Anal spines: 2-2; Anal soft rays: 9-10. Description: This species exhibit color variation with size and location. Juveniles are slate gray to a brilliant metallic blue with a bright orange-yellow tail. Adults are dark gray to black, and in most areas have a white tail (Ref. 1602). Body depth 2.1-2.3 in SL (Ref. 90102).
 Biology:  Adults are found in steep outer reef slopes and shallow coastal reef flats, sometimes forming large aggregations feeding on zooplankton several meters above the bottom. Juveniles remain close to shelter. Oviparous, distinct pairing during breeding (Ref. 205). Eggs are demersal and adhere to the substrate (Ref. 205). Nests are found in small patches of loose sand under ledges or at the base of slopes (Ref. 9710). Males guard and aerate the eggs (Ref. 205).
