 Family:  Macrouridae (Grenadiers or rattails), subfamily: Macrourinae
 Max. size:  111 cm TL (male/unsexed)
 Environment:  bathypelagic; depth range 600 - 2380 m, non-migratory
 Distribution:  Pacific Ocean: Kermadec Islands, Philippines, Darwin Seamount in central Pacific, Tasman Sea, Nazca Ridge. Indian Ocean: off Socotra Island and Western Australian Ridge. Subtropical and tropical Atlantic, including the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Sea.
 Diagnosis:  Dorsal spines (total): 2-2; Anal spines: 0-0. Head large, completely scaled except for the exposed posterior end of the preopercle and gill membranes. Snout short, bluntly pointed. No suborbital ridge developed; scales spinules numerous, small, sharp, conical, in irregularly divergent to roughly quincunx pattern. Pyloric caeca 12 to 16. Overall color is brown or grayish brown; fins somewhat darker.
 Biology:  Feeds on cephalopods, at least at larger sizes.

 Threat to humans:  harmless
 Country info:  Recorded from eastern Palawan (Ref. 10437) in 2,022 m as Macrourus paradoxus Smith & Radcliffe 1912 (Ref. 280).
