 Family:  Synaphobranchidae (Cutthroat eels), subfamily: Ilyophinae
 Max. size:  52 cm TL (male/unsexed)
 Environment:  demersal; depth range 30 - 270 m
 Distribution:  Western Atlantic: southern Florida and Texas in USA to Venezuela. Indo-West Pacific: South Africa (Ref. 3973, near Zanzibar (Ref. 26165) and Japan. Undoubtedly wide-ranging.
 Diagnosis:  Vertebrae: 119-130. Greyish white in color, median fins darker (Ref. 3973). No scales and no papillae on cheek. Lateralis line pores nearly complete. Counts of cephalic sensory pores: infraorbital 5; supraorbital 3; preoperculo-mandibular 6 (Ref. 31561)
 Biology:  Inhabits coastal waters. Prefers muddy bottoms, often off mouths of large rivers.
 IUCN Red List Status:   (Ref. 96402)
 Threat to humans:  harmless
 Country info:  Collected during the Hearst Expedition 2011 done off Batangas and Mindoro, off SW Luzon (Ref. 95664).
