 Family:  Sphyraenidae (Barracudas)
 Max. size:  80 cm TL (male/unsexed); max.weight: 1,812.0 g
 Environment:  reef-associated; depth range 10 - 104 m
 Distribution:  Indian Ocean: East Africa and the Mascarene Islands (Ref. 9768). Pacific Ocean: north to southern Japan, south to the Coral Sea, and east to French Polynesia; also from the Hawaiian Islands. Common in oceanic islands of the Pacific (Ref. 9768). The exact range is uncertain because of the confusion of this species with Sphyraena acutipinnis and Sphyraena novaehollandiae.
 Diagnosis:  Dorsal spines (total): 6-6; Dorsal soft rays (total): 9-9; Anal spines: 2-2; Anal soft rays: 7-9. Coloration of the body with two bright yellow stripes on the sides; caudal fin darkish. Description: Characterized further by silvery body color; lateral line scales 120-135; single gill raker at angle of first gill arch; well spaced teeth, first two pairs in upper jaw angled inward; rounded corner of preopercle, absence of projecting flap; maxilla reaching within half eye diameter of anterior edge of eye; origin of first dorsal fin over origin of pelvic fins; forked caudal fin with slight convexity on each side of midline; depth of body 7.0-8.0 in SL (Ref. 90102).
 Biology:  Inhabits coral reefs or bays (Ref. 9768). Usually seen by day in large schools (Ref. 9768). Feeds on small poissons (Ref. 89972). Mainly nocturnal (Ref. 4887). Also caught with set nets (Ref. 9768). Minimum depth from Ref. 089972.
