Etymology: Hypseleotris: Greek, hypselos = high + The name of a Nile fish, eleotris (Ref. 45335).

This species is synonym of Hypseleotris cyprinoides (Valenciennes, 1837) in Eschmeyer (CofF ver. May 2011: Ref. 86870) following Thacker & Unmack (2005: Ref. 55103).
