Etymology: Bodianus: Bodianus after Bodiano or Pudiano, from the Portuguese pudor, meaning modesty (Jordan & Evermann, 1896).; macrourus: Name from the Greek makros for long, and feminine noun oura for tail, referring to the elongate tail depicted in a pencil drawing of this species on which the original description was based (Ref. 75973).

Short description Morphology | Morphometrics

Dorsal spines (total): 12 - 13; Dorsal soft rays (total): 9-11. Black band encircling body posteriorly oriented vertically in adults, almost as broad below lateral line as above; posterior edge of band not reaching past posterior edge of hypurals ventrally (Ref. 9823).

Adults inhabit exposed seaward reefs with sand patches (Ref. 9710). Oviparous, distinct pairing during breeding (Ref. 205).
