Etymology: Acanthobrama: Greek, akantha = thorn + old French breme, bresme, a fresh water fish; 1460 (Ref. 45335).

Ecology
Freshwater; benthopelagic. Subtropical, preferred ?
Asia: endemic to the Jordan River drainage basin, where it is widely distributed in lakes and most tributaries. In the coastal plain of Palestine it occurs only in the Nahr al-Muqatta (Qishon River).
