Etymology: Bodianus: Bodianus after Bodiano or Pudiano, from the Portuguese pudor, meaning modesty (Jordan & Evermann, 1896).; flavipinnis: From the Latin flavus for yellow and pinna for fin, in reference to the bright yellow pectoral fin of this species (Ref. 44106).

Predorsal scales 15-24, reaching forward just in advance of above posterior margin of orbit; cheek scales extending forward only to corner of mouth; scales absent on lower jaw; teeth on dental ridge of each jaw in a single row, those anteriorly small but distinct, close behind and in line with prominent anterior canines; posterior tips of dorsal and anal fins rounded; caudal fin truncate to slightly rounded; red above and white below with two large white blotches above lateral line below spinous portion of dorsal fin; pectoral fins bright yellow (Ref. 44106).
Adults are found in caves and archways on reefs (Ref. 44106). Likely to occur in depths greater than 250 m (Ref. 44106). Oviparous, distinct pairing during breeding (Ref. 205).
