Etymology: Oxyeleotris: Greek, oxys = sharp + The name of a Nile fish, eleotris (Ref. 45335); stagnicola: Named in reference to its habitat (stagnicola = "swamp-dweklling").

Known only from two specimens from the type locality in New Guinea, Indonesia, collected in 1997. Inhabits sago-Pandanus swamp habitat. Attempt to collect specimens in 1998 unsuccessful due to road construction.
