This species is distinguished by the following characters: D VI + I,8; A I,8; pectoral-fin rays 16, some of the middle rays branched; body scales reaching forward dorsally to end of second dorsal-fin, none ventrally; longitudinal scale series 39-50 (except in 8.7 and 10.5 mm SL subadults); transverse scale rows 8-11(except in 8.7 and 10.5 mm SL subadults); elongated body, its depth at anus 10-11% SL; head length 30-33% SL; head width slightly greater than head depth; head depth 42-50% HL; short snout, 25-30% HL; no anterior and posterior nostrils; slightly protruding lower jaw; gill opening reaching anteroventrally to below posterior half and end of preopercle; gill opening, extending forward to below posterior half and end of preopercle; mid-side of lower jaw with 2 curved canine tooth; pelvic fins cup-like, pelvic frenum with anteriorly-facing pocket; truncate caudal fin; color in alcohol dull orange-red, grading to yellow posteriorly on caudal peduncle and base of caudal fin; snout and lips are dull yellow; dorsal fins have whitish rays, transparent membranes, yellow along the base; caudal and pectoral fins with light yellowish rays and translucent membranes (Ref. 94797).
Caught by hand from the gorgonian Ellisella quadrilineata (Ref. 94797).
