branchiostegal counts
(english) The anterior branchiostegal rays may be small and bound tightly together, necessitating the use of a sharp probe to locate each one. Flexing the head relative to the vertebral column to free the gill membranes from the breast often makes the count easier. (See also: branchiostegal rays, branchial)
