Definition of Term

ichthyohemotoxin
(english) The poison found in the fresh blood of certain anguilliform fishes. These are largely parenteral (entry not through the intestine but through skin, buts, etc.) poisons, although some individuals have been poisoned by the ingestion of large amounts of the toxin. The poisons have hemolytic, immunological and neurological effects. They are usually destroyed by heat and gastric juices. (See also: ichthyohemotoxic fishes, ichthyohemotoxism, fish poisoning)
