Short description

Dorsal spines (total): 13; Dorsal soft rays (total): 8; Anal spines: 1; Anal soft rays: 9; Vertebrae: 27. Body densely covered with modified scales which form spinous points, best developed anteriorly; depth greater than 1/3 SL.. Lachrymal with 2 strong sharp spines, the first notably curved. Second infraorbital bone without spines, a prominent elongate slit lateral line pore. Uppermost preopercular lateral-line pores with finger-like cirri. Mouth very strongly upturned. Interorbit with prominent ridges, divergent anteriorly, convergent over middle of interorbit, strongly divergent posteriorly (Ref. 35984, 39602).
