Comments max length; depth range; 597.4 cm TL; 0 - 1200 m. Maximum size based on largest reliably measured specimen according to Randall (1987). Larger reported sizes, e.g. 6401 mm for a Cuban specimen (Bigelow & Schroeder, 1948) or 10,986 mm for an Australian specimen (Günther, 1870), are erroneous (Randall, 1987). Nevertheless, C. carcharias undoubtedly exceeds 6096 mm following Randall (1987) and possibly attains over 8000 mm according to Compagno (1984a). Maximum depth of 700 fathoms (1280 m) reported by Bigelow & Schroeder (1948) is erroneous (Francis et al., 2012)
