Inhabits deeper part of large streams and rivers along the base of the ghats (Ref. 41236). Has been introduced into reservoirs and lakes in peninsular India (Ref. 4832). Prefers rocky streams and fast flowing rivers. Feeds on debris and plant matter (Ref. 44149). Spawns in the upper Cauvery.
