'Sailfin', from 'sail' ( a piece of material by means of which wind is used to propel a ship through water, p. 1037 in Ref. 11978) and 'fin' (an external membranous process of a fish used in propelling or guiding the body, p. 463 in Ref. 11978) and refers to the large dorsal fin, the most striking feature of this species (especially in males, Ref. 1998); 'arctic', i.e., of the Arctic Ocean; 'grayling', i.e., general term given to salmonid species valued as food and sport fish (p. 534 in Ref. 11978). |
