Remarks Mittelhochdeutsch (old German). Also in Ref. 9900. 'Lachs' from same source as produced Old English 'laex', Swedish 'lax', Yiddish 'laks', English 'lox' and Russian 'losos' (i.e., smoked salmon) borrowed from Anglo-Norman 'saumoun' from Latin 'salmo, -onis' linked to 'salire', i.e., to jump and hence, the leaping fish (p. 454 in Ref. 11979). Official trade name (Ref. 47487).
