Remarks 'barbel', from Latin 'barba', i.e., beard, via Old French 'barbe'; refers to the sensitive whisker-like projections round the mouth (Ref. 11979); 'drum', applied to any of various bony fishes (family Sciaenidae) that make a drumming noise (probably from Dutch 'trom'; akin to Middle High German 'trumme', i.e., 'drum'; Ref. 27888). Name not listed in ASFIS version 2006 (Ref. 56807).
