Remarks | Haida usage of rockefish was considerable, particularly yelloweye rockfish; they were caught with light kelp lines or spears; once caught, sgan was allowed to age several days before being scaled, cut into chunks and boiled; eggs were boiled and had a similar consistency to porridge. The Haida name for Anthony Island is 'Sgan Gwaii', meaning 'Yelloweye Island' is well known for the abundance of this species; it was said that yelloweye could be taken by the people of Skedans in the lee of Skedans Island in any time of weather; they were also fished outside the sealion rocks at North Island and in Masset Inlet. |
