This species is distinguished by the following characters: Rings 15 + 37-38 = 52-53; D rays 24-25; subdorsal rings 5-6; pectoral fin rays 13-14; head length (HL) 8.6-8.8 in SL; snout length 2.5-2.7 in HL; body pattern generally consists of a series of 12 narrow white bars, each preceded by much broader, red bar punctuated with variable-sized white ocelli; caudal fin is red with broad, white posterior margin (Ref. 74959).
Usually encountered solitarily or in small groups containing up to 4 individuals on sheltered reefs in the vicinity of Triton Bay at depths of about 5-20 m. It was often seen on algal-covered rocky surfaces, but on one occasion was found among the branches of an unidentified gorgonian sea fan. The brood pouch is found immediately behind the anal fin and occupies the ventral surface of the first 10 tail rings (one pouch contained 34 ripe eggs with diameter ca 0.7 mm (Ref. 74959).
